Ancient Greek is your gateway to the philosophy, history, and literature of the classical world and the basis of New Testament scriptures and key early Christian writings. Greek was the language of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey; of famous tragedies like Oedipus Rex and Medea; of the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle; and of the Father of History, Herodotus. The Introduction to Ancient Greek offered by our department will give you the basis you need to explore the culture that laid the groundwork for much of modern Western civilization. Taking Ancient Greek at USF enables you to fulfill your language requirement in two, rather than three semesters. You may also apply a portion of your Ancient Greek credit towards completing a minor in Classical Studies. Apart from guaranteeing an improvement in the verbal component of your standardized tests, Greek is an excellent foundation for further studies in religion, philosophy, biology, comparative literature, politics, and many other fields.
